OBDII Products FAQ

Why purchase Edge Analysis software over any other scan tool?
First of all, when looking at other tools, make sure you are comparing apples to apples. Edge Analysis is a software program that can be used with virtually any hardware tool to log, diagnose and analyze engine problems and performance. It not only reads DTCs, but also analyzes performance parameters. Edge Analysis is all-inclusive, eliminating the need for other programs like Excel or Word to graph and print logged data. And, most importantly, Edge Analysis is easy to use, with more graphing options and point-and-click technology than any other performance analysis program.

I have data that I have collected from another source, can I use the Edge Analysis Software to perform the analysis, reporting, and playback?
Yes. As long as the data is in Comma delimited, tab delimited or space delimited format, the data can be imported into the Edge Program.

I need to perform mathematical calculations on my data using an external program; can I export my data from the Edge Program to another program?
Yes. The Edge program allows exporting of data into a Comma Delimited file which can be exported into any math program (Mat Lab, Mathematica, Math Cad etc.) or custom written program.

What is a Channel?
A channel is an input, either to the computer when acquiring data or viewing real time values, or to the software when performing analysis.

What equipment do I need to use Edge Analysis software?
Edge Analysis software can be used with virtually any OBDII interface hardware using J2534 protocol or ELM. Edge Analysis is currently allied with Drew Technology for use with CarDaq, DashDaq, ScanDaq, and Mongoose hardware.

What model cars does Edge Analysis work with?
Edge Analysis software can be used to analyze performance of any 1996 or newer vehicle with OBDII or any data logger.

My vehicle is receiving a DTC. What is wrong with my vehicle?
The diagnostics that you get from your vehicle's ECU is an indication of a problem that the vehicle's ECU has detected, but it is often, up to you to determine what exactly is wrong. It may not be as easy as replace part X when code PXXXX is returned. If you are not experienced at fixing your vehicle, then we recommend that you take it to a trained technician.

What does OBDII and ELM stand for?
OBDII is On Board Diagnostics II. ELM is the ELM electronics microchip.

What does the DTC code mean?
The DTC code is a 5 character alphanumeric code. Each digit has a specific meaning.

1. The first character defines the vehicle subsystem of the code

P = Powertrain
B = Body
C = Chassis
U = Network

2. The second character specifies the type of code

0 = Generic code (these apply to all makes)
1 = Manufacturer specific code

3. The third character specifies the subsystem

1 = Emission management (Fuel or Air)
2 = Injector circuit (Fuel or Air)
3 = Ignition or Misfire
4 = Emission Control
5 = Vehicle Speed and Idle Control
6 = Computer and Output Circuit
7 = Transmission
8 = Transmission
9 = SAE reserved
0 = SAE reserved

4. The fourth character is variable and related to the specific problem
5. The fifth character is variable and related to the specific problem

For a listing of DTC codes and their meanings check out the DTC table.

What is CAN?
CAN is an acronym for Controller Area Network. The CAN protocol was internationally standardized in 1993 as ISO 11898-1.

How do I know if my vehicle is OBD-II Compliant?
If the vehicle was manufactured after 1996 then it is OBD-II compliant.

Why does my vehicle only have a few parameters listed?
Some vehicles have a few supported parameters available through the OBDII vehicle interface. The list is determined by the sensors attached to the vehicle and connected to the ECU by the manufacturer.

What is a Parameter?
A parameter is a supported sensor.
